A parametric analysis of the transient behavior of lightning protection systems

2005

The paper have the purpose of investigate the influence of different parameters to enable better understanding of the transient performance of complex lightning protection systems (LPS). Lightning discharges constitute the major source of atmospheric or natural noise that can interfere with electric and electronic installations. The electromagnetic characterisation of the LPS environment plays a fundamental role in order to prevent unwanted coupling phenomena that may generate abnormal signals, electric stresses dangerous for the insulation of electric components, disruptive discharges and danger to persons. The model, developed by the authors, is based on a field-approach: the numerical so…

Potential demand and cost-benefit analysis of electric cars

2004

In this study an analysis of electric family car performances is carried out. In particular, the aim of this research is to appraise the possibility of introducing electric cars in urban mobility and the evaluation of its economic feasibility. First of all, we determined the potential electric car demand, which was forecasted using a stated preference (SP) analysis. The survey was carried out at the University of Palermo considering a particular target of consumer: ‘the hybrid household’. A logit demand model was calibrated using the SP technique to model the choice between the electric car and the conventional one. In the second part of the work, the economic feasibility of the electric ca…

Electrically Conductive Phthalocyanine Assemblies. Structural and Non-Integer Oxidation Number Considerations

1990

Aggregation is a well-known phenomenon in phthalocyanine chemistry. Interactions can occur between adjacent phthalocyanine rings, both in organic and aqueous phases, resulting in coupling between the electronic states of two, or more, phthalocyanine units [1].

Biogas from energy crops--optimal pre-treatments and storage, co-digestion and energy balance in boreal conditions.

2008

The objective of this research was to evaluate the biogas production from crops in boreal conditions, focusing on the optimal pre-treatment and storage methods, co-digestion and energy balance of farm-scale crop based biogas plants. Alkaline treatments offered some potential for improving the methane yield from grass and sugar beet tops. The results show that the CH4 yield of energy crops can be maintained by appropriate ensiling conditions for even after 11 months in ambient conditions. The CH4 yield was best preserved with wet grass mixture without additives. Co-digestion of manure and crops was shown to be feasible with feedstock volatile solids (VS) containing up to 40% of crops. The hi…

Crystal Structure of the Microwave Dielectric Resonator Ba2Ti9O20

1983

A single-crystal X-ray study of dibarium nonatitanate, Ba2Ti9O20, yielded the triclinic space group P 1 with a=0.7471(1), b= 1.4081(2), c= 1.4344(2) nm, α=89.94(2)°, β= 79.43(2)°, γ= 84.45(2)°, V = 1.476 nm3 Z = 4, and Dx= 4.61 Mg/m3. A refinement of atomic coordinates and isotropic thermal parameters led to a residual of 0.03. The structure consists of hexagonally closest-packed layers of Ba and O atoms in the sequence (hch)3. All Ti atoms reside in octahedral interstices of this closest packing. The various Ti coordination octahedra share only edges and corners with each other. One-half of the Ba atoms is twelve-coordinated by oxygen atoms, the other half is eleven-coordinated.

Inverse Conformational Selection in Lipid–Protein Binding

2021

International audience; Interest in lipid interactions with proteins and other biomolecules is emerging not only in fundamental biochemistry but also in the field of nanobiotechnology where lipids are commonly used, for example, in carriers of mRNA vaccines. The outward-facing components of cellular membranes and lipid nanoparticles, the lipid headgroups, regulate membrane interactions with approaching substances, such as proteins, drugs, RNA, or viruses. Because lipid headgroup conformational ensembles have not been experimentally determined in physiologically relevant conditions, an essential question about their interactions with other biomolecules remains unanswered: Do headgroups excha…

Dielectric and mechanical assessment of cellulosic insulation during transformer manufacturing

2021

Due to the impact of cellulose of paper insulation on transformer life, it is imperatire to remove moisture from the oil and the solid insulation. Several techniques have been implemented during manufacturing of power transformers to reduce water content in transformers. These drying processes can involve different costs and time, and they can damage the insulation paper. In this work, a drying process has been implemented in the laboratory trying to simulate the most aggressive conditions that can be suffered by the paper in transformer manufacturing in a real industry. Once the moisture content of papers was lower than 0.5%, the effect of the drying process on paper degradation was evalua…
